Mounjaro for Weight Loss on the NHS

You may be aware that over the next 3 years the NHS is starting to roll out the provision of Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) injections for weight loss. The first part of this 3-stage roll-out will begin in July 2025.

The year one roll-out of this programme is strictly limited to those with a BMI of Over 40* and 4 out of 5 of the following weight related conditions:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Dyslipidaemia (High Lipids(fats)/Cholesterol)
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Type II Diabetes Mellitus

(*37.5 for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds)

The injections will be prescribed along side a programme of Behavioural Support for Obesity services, including a reduced calorie diet and increased exercise regime. Patients must engage in this service in order for a prescription to be issued.

As a surgery we are not yet ready to start prescribing this medication, as we are waiting on full training for our clinical staff. Please be assured that, once we are in a position to do so, we will be in contact with those patients who are eligible to discuss their treatment options.
